Cost of a rooftop photovoltaic system: the ROOFTRACKER case

On a flat industrial roof, the usable space cannot be expanded: with a fixed structure, generating more energy means increasing capacity, and therefore requiring further investment. ROOFTRACKER changes the terms of the economic comparison. On an actual 5,600 m² system, for the same surface area: +23% in specific output and -35.2% in turnkey installation cost.

The economic limit of the fixed structure

A fixed 5° structure delivers maximum yield within a narrow time window. To increase output, there are two paths: use more surface area, where available, or densify the system and accept more modules, more ballast, and more strings to install.
On a flat industrial roof Both roads run out soon. The constraint isn't the roof: it's the fixed arrangement of the modules, which doesn't follow the sun.

900 €/kWp versus 1,100 €/kWp

Same 5,600 sqm roof area, same 500 W module, two configurations compared: 5° ballasted fixed structure (ZC0536) and ROOFTRACKER. The fixed-tilt starts at €900/kWp, the tracker at €1,100/kWp. On a unit price basis, the fixed-tilt is more cost-effective.

Regarding the total cost of the project, the ratio is reversed. The turn-key installation drops from 835,200 EUR to 541,200 EUR: -35.2 %, which equates to 294,000 EUR less for the same surface area, with a specific yield that is 23 % higher. Prices estimated based on 2026 market values for industrial rooftop photovoltaic systems.

The cost per kWp is a supply metric. The system cost is a project metric. They are two different numbers and do not move in the same direction.

How east-west tracking works

ROOFTRACKER is the flat roof tracker Designed and manufactured by Contact Italia: an east-west single-axis tracker for flat roofs. Module rotation is controlled throughout the day with a maximum angle of ±30° and a tracking precision of 1°, programmable per individual tracker. Forces are discharged onto the structure, not the roof.

The movement is managed by ROOFBRAIN, the in-house developed control electronics: each actuator has its own control unit (TCU), the units communicate via a wireless mesh network with a gateway for remote control via a web interface, and the system activates automatic storage beyond wind and snow thresholds. Not a simple mechanism, but a technology that thinks.

What changes during the installation phase

  • Install without civil works - ballasted system with pre-fabricated ballast blocks, no foundations.
  • Assemble using bolted joints only — no special equipment or skilled labour.
  • Absorb the roof level difference — The bearing bracket compensates for gradient variations in the installation surface of up to 4 cm.
  • Avoid field data cabling — communication between the TCUs is wireless.
  • To last in an aggressive environment — hot-dip galvanised S355JR and S235JR structural steelwork, bearings in glass-matrix reinforced polymeric material, designed and tested by Contact Italia.
  • Working with third-party documentation — UNI EN 1090 (STS), Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, structural certification D.M. 17/01/2018, as well as CFD simulations and wind tunnel, climatic chamber and salt spray tests.

Why it matters for designers and installers

For designers, the comparison shifts from €/kWp to the overall cost of the work, with more predictable loads because dynamic stresses remain within the structure rather than on the floor slab. Structural verification starts from documentation that is already available.

For the installer, fewer kWp installed on the same surface area means fewer modules to handle, fewer ballast weights and fewer strings, with no foundations or welding. For the distributor, it is the answer to a customer asking for more energy from a surface area that does not increase.

Industrial photovoltaic energy is entering the phase where the yield of every square metre of roofing matters, rather than the power density that can be installed. We design systems that work on this margin, and put them to the test on real installations before bringing them to market.
